PFAS... Again!

There's no other way to say this:

The latest science on PFAS is dire.

Not because exposure is uniquely dramatic. You are not walking into a chemical plant. The exposure points are ordinary: the pan you cooked breakfast in, the jacket that keeps you dry, the bottled water you grabbed at the airport.

And the reach of these chemicals is wider than most people realize. According to CDC biomonitoring data, PFAS are detectable in the blood of nearly all Americans tested. Here in Australia (perhaps) we’re lucky not to be tested1Not people who live near industrial sites. Not chemical plant workers. The general population.

What makes this alarming is not just how widespread exposure is. It is what happens once these compounds are inside you.

The science of "nearly permanent."

PFAS compounds have some of the longest biological half-lives ever measured in environmental medicine. Half-life is the time it takes for the level of a compound in your blood to drop by half.

PFHxS, used in firefighting foam and metal plating, has a measured half-life of 8.5 years in the human body. PFOS, the 3M surfactant in Scotchgard for four decades, comes in at 5.4 years. PFOA, DuPont's processing aid for Teflon, sits at 3.8 years. (2)

These are not trace exposures that clear in a few days. Once a PFAS molecule enters your blood, your body cannot break it apart. The carbon-to-fluorine bond, the bond that defines every PFAS compound, is the strongest single bond in organic chemistry. Your liver, which neutralizes most of what you encounter, cannot touch it.

Worse, your kidneys actively reabsorb PFAS back into your bloodstream instead of letting it pass through urine. Your body is not slow at clearing these compounds. It is actively holding onto them.

That is why researchers call them "forever chemicals." The name is not marketing. It describes what the data shows

.One practical step worth taking now

If you still cook with non-stick pans, consider switching them out. It will not eliminate your PFAS exposure overnight. But non-stick coatings are one of the most avoidable daily sources, and stopping new input while your body slowly clears existing accumulation is meaningful, even if the timeline is long.
Another one: get yourself real pure healthy water.
